My name is Stefanos Theodorakos. I’m 11 years old, and I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 6 years ago. 2 years ago, I was also diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Despite the challenges, I feel very lucky to have a supportive family and access to the advanced medical technology that helps me stay healthy and safe.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the same opportunities. My Papou (my Greek grandfather) came to America at age 19. After he arrived, he was diagnosed with diabetes—but he didn’t have the money or education to take care of himself properly. He became very sick because of this. I never got to meet him, but my dad says he was the kindest man alive, and one of the hardest workers—sometimes working four jobs at once to support his family.

I believe schools should do a better job teaching students about chronic illnesses like diabetes. Many kids get bullied simply for wearing a monitor, using needles, or being in a wheelchair. By teaching kindness, empathy, and the realities of living with these conditions, we can help create a more understanding and inclusive world.

To help kids like me, I started a YouTube channel and an Instagram page where I talk about life with T1D and Celiac Disease. I want others to know they have a community—and hope.

I’m so excited to be selected to join you on Capitol Hill this summer for the T1D Children’s Congress! I hope to meet you and your team in person.

Maybe we can talk about how to make insulin and medical devices more affordable for kids who need them. It would make me so happy to know that more children can live safely and more free with Type 1.

Thank you so much for reading my story.
